Medicare stipulates that for a patient to be seen by a specialist, the patient must have a referral from a General Practitioner for medicare rebate to be paid. If you do not have a referral you will have to pay the full consultation fee.
Medicare does not completely cover the costs of your consultation as set by the Australian Medical Association. For this reason modest GAP payments are charged for all consultations.

For most surgical procedures as long as you have private insurance the account is normally sent directly to your health fund and there is NO GAP to pay. However for some complex surgical procedures, including all Obesity procedures there will be a GAP to pay. This will be discussed with you prior to your surgery.

All new patients attending Adelaide Metabolic Surgery for consultation regarding Obesity Surgery, are required to attend an appointment to see Dr Fiona Nancarrow (Bariatric Physician). Dr Nancarrow also assists Dr France with surgery, so she will follow you with your care throughout your time as a patient at the clinic. At this initial appointment, you will discuss your medical history, and learn about your different options for surgery, so you will be appropriately informed when you meet with Dr France.
During your initial appointment with Dr France, he may be able to schedule your surgery, alternatively he may send you for some routine tests to gain a better understanding of your current physical condition before scheduling your surgery.
